Belizean government denounces gang invasion at hospital

The Belizean government has publicly condemned a disturbing event at the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where a group of individuals, identified as gang members, invaded the medical facility earlier this month.

This alarming occurrence coincided with the hospitalization of David Galindo, a 44-year-old man with a criminal history, who sustained critical injuries from a gunshot.

A series of unfortunate events

Galindo was attacked while buying food in the Cayo province of western Belize, an area that had previously witnessed similar violent incidents targeting him.

Following his emergency admittance to the hospital, several of Galindo‘s acquaintances went to the hospital, creating a hostile environment for the medical staff.

This breach of peace not only endangered the hospital staff but also spotlighted the ongoing concerns regarding the safety of healthcare workers in the region.

Galindo later succumbed to his injuries.

Government and police mobilize

In response to the chaos, the Belizean government issued a stern statement on Tuesday night.

They voiced their solidarity with the citizens’ dismay over the breach of security at the hospital and acknowledged the fortunate lack of injuries to medical staff or other patients during the ordeal.

Immediate actions were outlined, including intensified police operations aimed at apprehending the culprits and other gang members active in the San Ignacio and Santa Elena areas.

Moreover, the government pledged robust support to both the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Belize Police Department.

These bodies are tasked with spearheading a comprehensive operation to bolster security for local businesses and reassess the police command structure in the affected areas.

Enhancing security measures

An imperative component of the government’s action plan is the reinforcement of security protocols at the San Ignacio Community Hospital and other public health institutions.

The aim is to guarantee the safety of medical practitioners, staff, and patients consistently.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams also engaged with the hospital’s management and staff on Tuesday afternoon to deliberate on their security concerns and explore strategies to prevent future incidents.

Williams emphasized the ongoing efforts to ensure the implementation of effective measures to avert similar occurrences.

Family’s plea for justice

Amidst governmental and police actions, Galindo’s family voiced their frustrations. Mynor Galindo, David’s brother, criticized the authorities for allegedly focusing more on persecuting his family rather than tracking down the actual perpetrators.

He lamented the lack of progress in the investigation despite providing detailed information about the attackers.
