Jamaican minister announces youth-focused agricultural program
During the recent 4-H National Achievement Expo in Clarendon, Jamaica’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, announced an upcoming initiative that aims to cultivate an exchange of agricultural practices and insights among young farmers across the Caribbean.
This program will allow members of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs to engage in cost-free travels to various Caribbean islands, where they can learn from differing agricultural techniques and establish best practices.
A platform for learning and sharing
The initiative is designed not only to facilitate travel but also to create a supportive network where young individuals can connect with seasoned experts in agriculture both locally and regionally.
This network will serve as a vital platform for the transfer of expert farming knowledge, ensuring that the next generation of farmers is well-equipped to handle the challenges and opportunities of modern agriculture.
Increasing youth involvement in agriculture
The Minister highlighted the significant role of the 4-H Clubs in attracting more young people to the agricultural sector.
Through innovative programs and a focus on sustainable enterprise, these clubs are pivotal in shaping a future where agriculture is seen not just as a means of subsistence but as a viable path to prosperity and business success.
Expansion of the rural youth economic empowerment program
In tandem with these efforts, the Rural Youth Economic Empowerment Programme (RYEEP) has been expanded to further support young individuals between the ages of 18 and 35.
This expansion has already trained hundreds of youths, providing them with the necessary resources to build and maintain sustainable businesses in agriculture.
The role of Jamaica 4-H Clubs
As the leading youth training organization in Jamaica, the 4-H Clubs boast over 105,000 members and are instrumental in fostering agricultural skills among the youth.
These clubs, found in schools, churches, communities, and special youth facilities, are committed to educating young people in agriculture, leadership, homemaking, and social skills.
