These updates are rooted in the recommendations of Professor Orlando Patterson-chaired Jamaica Education Transformation Commission (JETC), which proposed 365 actions to enhance the country’s education sector.

Strengthening governance and accountability

Minister of Education and Youth, Hon. Fayval Williams, emphasized the importance of the revamped measures during the 2024/25 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on May 8.

She highlighted that these new procedures mandate a performance review of school boards at the end of each cycle, alongside the implementation of a robust monitoring and evaluation framework.

The updated measures also call for comprehensive training of school board members, streamlining existing governance structures, and acknowledging the contributions of board members.

The impact of effective governance on education quality

Minister Williams underscored the direct correlation between effective governance and student achievement.

She stressed the pivotal role of good governance in managing a young and complex educational system like Jamaica’s, with diverse actors playing varied roles.

Acknowledging the contributions of school board members

Jamaica’s school board members represent one of the nation’s largest groups of volunteers, with nearly 10,000 individuals dedicating countless hours and often their own resources to support schools.  They play a crucial role in upholding the Education Act and Regulations.

Strengthening the National Council on Education

The National Council on Education, responsible for overseeing the governance portfolio, is actively working to fortify school boards nationwide.
