To enhance security within the education system, Jamaica’s Ministry of Education and Youth is rolling out a comprehensive security camera installation plan.
A survey conducted in July 2023 identified 154 schools already equipped with a total of 1,955 security cameras, forming the foundation for improved safety measures.
Minister, Hon. Fayval Williams said that eight additional schools have received $15 million in grants for CCTV camera procurement, reinforcing safety and security across educational institutions.
The announcement was made during a statement to the House of Representatives on Tuesday (January 16).
Conflict resolution
The Ministry, in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, is also intensifying restorative justice practices and conflict resolution within schools.
Approximately 3,600 participants from 120 schools will receive conflict resolution and restorative justice training, fostering a more harmonious learning environment.

Prioritizing mental health: Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Meanwhile, 150 students across 10 secondary schools will benefit from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) training, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – Positive Pathways to Guidance Counsellors and Social Workers – within the targeted schools.
