Espat, who served as the Area Representative/Member of Parliament for Toledo East, breathed his last following a battle with illness.

A legacy of service

Michael Espat’s political journey spanned over four decades, during which he fervently represented the Toledo East Constituency for five terms.

His transition from an educator to a politician marked a significant chapter in Belize’s political landscape.

Tributes pour in for a dedicated advocate

Franics Fonseca, Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, paid homage to Espat’s unwavering commitment to his constituents.

Describing him as “old school,” Fonseca highlighted Espat’s steadfast advocacy for his people and district. Espat’s allegiance to the principles of George Price and his unwavering dedication to the People’s United Party (PUP) earned him the reputation of a true “PUP warrior.”

Condolences from across the political spectrum

Beyond party lines, tributes flowed from both sides of the political aisle. Minister of Health Kevin Bernard, along with his staff, extended heartfelt condolences to Espat’s family and friends.

The Ministry of Economic Development also joined in mourning, recognizing Espat as a remarkable leader whose legacy will endure for generations.

Opposition leader Shyne Barrow, though differing in political ideology, acknowledged Espat’s six terms of service and extended sympathies to his family.
