In 2023, Jamaica’s agricultural sector achieved a near-record production milestone, harvesting an impressive 779,254 tonnes of domestic crops.
This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as it represents the second-highest production level ever recorded in the nation’s history.
Despite facing challenging weather conditions, including one of the hottest years on record and periods of both drought and intense rainfall, the agricultural sector managed to flourish.
Overcoming environmental challenges
The Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining, Hon. Franklin Witter, highlighted the resilience of the Jamaican agricultural sector in the face of these environmental hurdles.
The adverse weather conditions did impact productivity, but the remarkable output is seen as a testament to the country’s perseverance and divine favor.
This sentiment was expressed during the 41st Annual National Farmers’ Month church service, underscoring the gratitude towards the resilience and blessings that enabled such an achievement.
Celebrating Farmer’s Month with renewed support
The occasion also served as a platform to reaffirm the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector.
The Agriculture State Minister emphasized the significance of Farmer’s Month as a time to bolster support across various agricultural departments and sectors.
The ministry’s strategic vision, encapsulated in the New FACE of Food strategy, aims to address food security, agro-business development, climate change adaptation, and export expansion, highlighting a forward-thinking approach to agriculture.
Industry and community leaders rally behind farmers
Community and industry leaders, including Lenworth Fulton, President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), and Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Collen Gager, praised the dedication and hard work of farmers and stakeholders.
The acknowledgment from these figures reinforces the vital role of the agricultural sector in ensuring food security and the overall well-being of the Jamaican populace.
The municipal corporation’s pledge to continue supporting agriculture in the parish further illustrates the community’s commitment to sustaining this essential industry.
A unifying theme: Sustainability and self-sufficiency
The Farmer’s Month Church service, held under the rallying cry ‘Grow what we eat… Eat what we grow’, encapsulates a broader vision of sustainability and self-sufficiency.
This theme not only promotes local agriculture but also encourages Jamaicans to support their farming community by choosing locally-grown produce.
