UWI and North-West University forge historic partnership

In a monumental step towards academic collaboration, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI), has lauded the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with South Africa’s North-West University as “historic and emotional”.

Professor Beckles emphasized the deep-rooted connection between the Caribbean and South Africa, citing shared struggles against Apartheid as a testament to their solidarity.

Similarities in structure and vision

Highlighting striking resemblances in structure and vision, Vice-Chancellor Beckles underscored the parallel trajectories of the two institutions. 

Both universities boast multi-campus setups, with The UWI spanning five campuses and North-West University encompassing three. 

Additionally, similarities in demographic makeup and student population size further solidify their kinship.

 Both institutions are unwavering in their commitment to excellence, evident through their pursuit of global institutional accreditation.

Collaborative framework: A blueprint for success

The MOU serves as a blueprint for multifaceted collaboration between The UWI and North-West University. 

It facilitates a wide array of activities, including student and faculty exchanges, capacity building initiatives, joint research ventures, publication endeavors, as well as the organization of seminars, conferences, and public lectures. 

Moreover, the MOU lays the groundwork for the development and delivery of specialized courses, fostering a dynamic exchange of knowledge and expertise.

Shared aspirations

Echoing Professor Beckles’ sentiments, Professor Bismark Tyobeka, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of North-West University, expressed pride in the partnership, emphasizing a shared vision for global excellence. 

North-West University, formed through the amalgamation of historically significant institutions, symbolizes the post-Apartheid era’s commitment to reconciliation and nation-building.
