In a pivotal performance on the opening day of West Indies’ three-day game against Cricket Australia in Adelaide last week, all-rounder Justin Greaves emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset.
Greaves played a crucial role in a century partnership with fellow batsman Kavem Hodge, contributing significantly to West Indies’ recovery after a challenging second session.
Greaves, a right-handed batsman, showcased his batting prowess by registering a top score of 65 runs during a 120-run partnership for the fifth wicket alongside Hodge, who contributed 52 runs. This partnership was instrumental in West Indies’ resurgence, as they reached a total of 251 for eight at the close of play at Karen Rolton Oval.
Found themselves in a precarious situation
Their partnership was particularly vital because West Indies had found themselves in a precarious situation, losing three wickets for just three runs, leaving them at 103 for four. Greaves displayed an attacking style of play, lashing 10 boundaries in his innings, which spanned 135 deliveries. However, his innings came to an end in the final session when he played onto the stumps off an innocuous delivery from seamer Liam Haskett, who finished with figures of 3-57.
Reflecting on his innings and approach, Greaves highlighted the significance of a positive mindset. He credited his confidence to spending time with Kavem Hodge in the Windwards last season, emphasizing their shared commitment to maintaining a positive outlook in their batting.
Greaves, who arrived in Australia two weeks ago, is among seven uncapped players in an inexperienced 15-man West Indies squad for two Tests against the hosts. Despite having played three One-Day Internationals against Ireland two years ago without significant recognition, Greaves is now seeking to make an impact on his maiden Test tour.
One game at a time
Expressing his approach, Greaves emphasized taking one game at a time and ensuring preparedness if selected for the first Test. He acknowledged his familiarity with most of the teammates due to his extensive travels in the Caribbean and expressed his intention to enjoy the experience.
Throughout his career, Greaves has faced injury setbacks, but recent times have seen him maintain his fitness, impressing selectors with his performances. His standout performance in last October’s Super50 Cup, where he accumulated 403 runs at an impressive average of 80, played a crucial role in powering Leeward Islands Hurricanes into the final.
Greaves is determined to return to peak form, particularly focusing on his pace bowling, which has been a significant aspect of his all-round game. He noted his enjoyment of bowling and expressed his eagerness to regain his rhythm and relish the experience of representing West Indies on his maiden Test tour.
