The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has taken a 24-year-old man into custody following a shocking shooting incident that has left a five-year-old child hospitalized.
Child hospitalized with a “Warhead” in her throat
The GPF disclosed that the incident came to light on Thursday when officials at the Linden Hospital Complex reported the admission of a young child with a foreign object, described as a “warhead,” lodged in her throat.
According to preliminary reports, the child was reportedly shot while lying in her bed, as a bullet penetrated the wall from an adjacent apartment.
Reports are that the “warhead” has been successfully removed from the child’s throat. The child remains hospitalized but in a stable condition.
A mother’s nightmare
Reports are that the child’s mother, who was attending to her eight-month-old baby when the incident occurred, heard her daughter’s screams.
The concerned mother immediately checked on her child, who reported that her throat had been injured.
“She went to the victim and enquired what was wrong and the child said that she had hit her throat,” the police said.
It was further reported that the mother applied petroleum jelly to soothe her daughter’s discomfort and put her back to sleep.
However, the next morning, the child was crying, prompting her mother to examine her throat.
Reports are that she discovered that it was swollen and took her child to the Mackenzie Hospital. There, they made the unsettling discovery of a bullet lodged in the child’s neck.
Accusations and charges
The investigation has pointed to a 24-year-old taxi driver as the prime suspect in this case.
During an audio-video recorded interview with investigators on Thursday night, the suspect reportedly admitted to his involvement in the shooting incident.
He has since provided crucial information, suggesting that he returned the weapon to an unidentified “friend”.
Law enforcement officials are actively working to establish contact with this individual.
