The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued a call to action, urging its Member States to maintain surveillance measures in response to the heightened incidence of acute respiratory diseases throughout the Region of the Americas.
This surge in cases has been attributed to the simultaneous presence of SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus since late 2023.
Northern Hemisphere grapples with triple epidemic
Presently, the Northern Hemisphere is grappling with epidemics of all three viruses, as anticipated during the winter season.
Concurrently, certain countries in the Southern Hemisphere have reported incidences surpassing seasonal expectations, primarily attributed to the ongoing circulation of SARS-CoV-2.
Epidemiological insights for the Caribbean subregion
In its latest epidemiological update, PAHO shines a spotlight on the Caribbean Subregion. Here, SARS-CoV-2 activity has remained relatively low over the last four Epidemiological Weeks (EWs).
In contrast, influenza activity has exhibited fluctuations at moderate levels during the same period. Meanwhile, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity, following an earlier increase, has also shown fluctuating trends at moderate levels throughout the last four EWs.
Decline in influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory infection cases
The prevalence of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases has been on a steady decline over the past four EWs.
Notably, a higher proportion of these cases have been associated with influenza.
Belize and Saint Lucia experience unique challenges
PAHO highlights specific situations in Belize and Saint Lucia. In Belize, SARS-CoV-2 has recently crossed the epidemic threshold, signaling an increase in cases during the last EW.
Simultaneously, influenza activity has been on the rise over the past four EWs, reaching moderate levels.
In Saint Lucia, the persistence of high SARS-CoV-2 activity coincides with a surge in SARI cases, surpassing the threshold for moderate activity.
PAHO’s recommendations
PAHO has provided essential recommendations to its Member States in light of these developments. It stresses the critical importance of maintaining surveillance efforts to promptly detect any shifts in the circulation or severity of respiratory diseases.
Moreover, Member States are advised to be prepared for a potential surge in cases and hospitalizations, underscoring the need to continue robust vaccination efforts against both influenza and COVID-19, with particular emphasis on vulnerable and high-risk populations.
PAHO’s ongoing commitment
PAHO reaffirms its unwavering commitment to closely monitoring the evolving situation and remains ready to offer updates and support to countries as required.
As the battle against respiratory viruses continues, vigilance and proactive measures remain paramount to safeguarding public health in the Americas.
