Jamaica’s Ministry of Agriculture has denied any involvement in granting veterinary permits for lobster importation into the country.
The Ministry, in a statement, refuted claims circulating on various social media and other platforms regarding the importation of Caribbean Spiny Lobsters (Panulirus argus).
Stringent regulations for lobster imports
The Ministry clarified that stringent regulations exist when it comes to importing animals, including lobsters, as well as any animal products or byproducts.
Upstanding lobster exports
Adhering to international standards and local laws, the Ministry underscored that the majority of lobsters harvested in Jamaican waters are exported in a manner consistent with these regulations.
No permit issued for importation
The Ministry stated that no importation permit has been issued for lobsters.
To ensure compliance and safeguard the integrity of the nation’s fisheries sector, the Ministry is collaborating closely with key regulatory bodies such as the Veterinary Services Division and the National Fisheries Authority.
Together, they are working in tandem with the Jamaica Customs Agency to exercise vigilant oversight over all imports and exports of fish, fishery products, and related by-products.
