West Indies pacer Jayden Seales is eager to make a significant impact during the West Indies A team tour of South Africa, viewing it as a crucial step in both his short-term and long-term career plans.
The 22-year-old Trinidad and Tobago native sees this tour as an opportunity to reaffirm his abilities and stake a strong claim for a recall to the senior West Indies side. Seales had faced a career-threatening knee injury that required surgery more than a year ago during the tour of Australia.
He is determined to perform well for the A team, pick up wickets consistently, and maintain pressure on the captain as he strives to secure a spot in the senior Test team during the upcoming tour of Australia next January to February.
Sidelined for almost a year due to the knee injury
Seales, who made his senior Test debut for West Indies three years ago at the age of 19, has been working diligently on his comeback after being sidelined for almost a year due to the knee injury. He made sporadic appearances for the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament in September and was part of the T&T Red Force squad that clinched the West Indies Super50 Cup title on home soil.
With 37 wickets in 10 Tests, Seales has already demonstrated his potential, becoming the youngest West Indies bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in a Test match against Pakistan two years ago. In the West Indies A team, led by his Red Force and senior West Indies Test teammate, Joshua Da Silva, Seales is expected to play a crucial role with the ball.
Reflecting on his return to South Africa, where he had participated in the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup three years ago, Seales expressed his excitement and enthusiasm for playing red-ball cricket matches again. He also noted that some of his Under-19 teammates would be joining him on this tour, creating an opportunity to rekindle the same energy they had and give their best for West Indies.
Credits CWI for supporting his surgery in England
In addition to his commitments with the West Indies A team, Seales has signed with the English county side, Sussex, as an overseas bowler for the next season. He had initially been signed for this year’s season but had to withdraw due to the knee injury. Seales will be available for Sussex from the start of the season until June 8, allowing him to participate in the County Championship and Twenty20 Blast before potentially joining the West Indies squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, to be hosted jointly in the Caribbean and the United States.
Seales acknowledged the challenges of the past year of rehabilitation after knee surgery but expressed readiness to move forward and focus on achieving greater things in his cricket career. He credited Cricket West Indies for supporting his surgery in England and the dedicated physical therapy team in Trinidad, who played a crucial role in his recovery.
West Indies A embarked on their trip to South Africa, where they will play three “Tests” against South Africa A between Tuesday and December 8, with matches scheduled in the cities of Benoni, East London, and Bloemfontein.
