In a game that marked the debut of a newly designed court and distinctive ‘Heat Culture’ jerseys, the Miami Heat aimed to turn a new leaf, and they did so with an impressive performance.
Tyler Herro led the charge with 24 points, just one assist shy of a triple-double, while Jimmy Butler contributed 20 points, helping the Heat break a four-game losing streak by defeating the Washington Wizards 121-114 on Friday night.
Herro’s remarkable stat line included 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Miami team. Bam Adebayo and Duncan Robinson also made significant contributions, each scoring 18 points, as the Heat displayed their offensive prowess by shooting an impressive 60% from the field.
Despite the victory, Herro acknowledged, “We’ve got a long way to go,” reflecting the team’s desire for continued improvement.
Kyle Kuzma leads Wizards’ efforts with 22 points
This matchup marked the first game of the In-Season Tournament for both the Heat and the Wizards. Placed in East Group B alongside Milwaukee, New York, and Charlotte, Miami secured a win on their newly painted red court. The Wizards, on the other hand, will look to bounce back in their next tournament game at home against Charlotte on November 10, while the Heat’s next tournament outing will be on November 14 at Charlotte.
Washington’s Kyle Kuzma led his team’s efforts with 22 points, complemented by 19 points from Jordan Poole and 14 points from Deni Avdija. Kuzma acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, “I think we need to play better and play a little bit harder for sure. I think we all need to be better.”
The Wizards had an explosive start to the game, making their first 10 shots and shooting an astonishing 76.5% from the field in the opening quarter. This marked their best first quarter in nearly three years and was the highest field goal percentage allowed by the Heat in an opening period since the 2014 NBA Finals.
Despite the Wizards’ strong early showing, the first quarter ended in a tie at 34-34, and Miami gradually gained control, finishing the first half with a 60-54 lead.
Heat seizes initiative in third quarter
In the third quarter, the Heat seized the initiative, outscoring the Wizards 41-27 and establishing a commanding 101-81 lead heading into the final period. Miami extended their lead to 25 points midway through the fourth quarter before Washington, primarily using their bench players, staged a 15-0 run to narrow the deficit to 115-105.
The Wizards have struggled defensively in the third quarter this season, allowing at least 31 points in all five of their third quarters.
Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. acknowledged the team’s defensive challenges, saying, “We allow teams all those big runs in the third. We have to figure that out. Give them credit; they came out ready to go in that third quarter.”
Despite their loss, the Wizards shot an impressive 57% from the field. Jimmy Butler commented on the game, saying, “The offense, definitely good tonight. Defense, not as much.”
Looking ahead, the Wizards will face the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night, while the Miami Heat will host the Los Angeles Lakers in their next game also on Monday night.
