On Saturday, November 16, Avelo’s inaugural flight from Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Hartford, Connecticut, landed at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay with over 150 passengers on board.

This new route, Avelo’s first international Caribbean service, will operate twice weekly, further solidifying Jamaica’s reputation as a leading destination for leisure travelers and a vital connection for the Jamaican diaspora in the U.S.

Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Edmund Bartlett, emphasized the strategic significance of the service. “The U.S. remains a critical pillar in our growth strategy as our number one source market. This new flight will help us attract more visitors from the New England region, making travel to Jamaica easier and more seamless,” Bartlett said. He highlighted the potential for increased jobs and economic growth as a result of this service.

Director of Tourism Donovan White also lauded the development, noting its dual impact on both leisure travel and diaspora connections. “This new service not only strengthens our ties with the vibrant Jamaican community in Connecticut but also provides New England travelers with easy access to Jamaica’s rich culture, warm hospitality, and world-class attractions,” White said.

Giselle Cortes, Head of Airports for Avelo Airlines, celebrated the partnership between the airline and Jamaica, calling the move a historic step for the company. “Montego Bay becoming our first international destination is a proud moment for Avelo. With our motto of ‘one crew’ aligning perfectly with Jamaica’s ‘one love,’ we are thrilled to be here,” Cortes said.

The new route offers fares starting at $178 one-way, enhancing Jamaica’s accessibility for travelers across a broader market. Officials anticipate the service will drive increased tourist arrivals from the U.S. Northeast while generating significant economic benefits for Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region.

To celebrate the inaugural flight, Sangster International Airport hosted a ceremony featuring traditional Jamaican cultural performances, providing passengers with a first taste of the island’s vibrant heritage. The event was attended by government officials, tourism stakeholders, and industry leaders, showcasing the collaborative effort to bolster Jamaica’s tourism appeal.

The flights, scheduled on Wednesdays and Saturdays, cater to both leisure travelers and those visiting friends and relatives (VFR), offering convenient options for weekend getaways and longer stays.
