Between January and February of 2024, the island nation saw an unprecedented influx of visitors, welcoming over one million tourists and raking in an impressive US$1 billion in tourism earnings.

This remarkable achievement, as highlighted by Tourism Minister Hon. Edmund Bartlett, marks a historic first for Jamaica.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Thursday, March 14, at the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) in New Kingston, Minister Bartlett expressed jubilation at the exceptional performance of Jamaica’s tourism industry.

He emphasized that this is a record that has never happened in the history of Jamaica.

Despite facing various challenges, the resilient trajectory of Jamaica’s tourism sector continues to soar, as echoed by Mr. Bartlett’s sentiments.

Surging arrival numbers

The surge in tourism numbers during the first two months of 2024 showcased an impressive blend of both stopover visitors and cruise passengers.

Minister Bartlett revealed that the arrivals comprised over 600,000 stopover visitors and more than 300,000 cruise passengers.

This surge represents a notable increase of seven per cent in stopover visitors and a remarkable 29 per cent surge in cruise passengers compared to the previous year.

Moreover, the most significant highlight lies in tourism earnings, which surged to a staggering US$1 billion, marking an 8.8 per cent increase from the previous year.

Positive trajectory for future growth

Minister Bartlett underscored the significance of this current trajectory, emphasizing its positive implications for the Ministry’s ambitious projections. With the continued upward trend, Jamaica is poised to achieve even greater milestones in the coming years.

Minister Bartlett confidently projected that Jamaica is on track to welcome five million visitors and earn an impressive US$5 billion by the year 2025.

This ambitious goal reflects the unwavering commitment of Jamaica’s tourism sector to sustainable growth and development.

Building on past success

The recent surge in tourism numbers builds upon Jamaica’s previous successes in the tourism arena.

Last year, the island nation welcomed over four million visitors and earned a commendable US$4.2 billion.

The consistent growth trajectory underscores Jamaica’s status as a premier tourist destination, drawing travelers from around the globe seeking unforgettable experiences amidst the island’s rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking natural beauty.
