The Guyanese government is setting a bold agenda to boost the international presence of local products by establishing “Guyana Shop” corners at major international airports.
This strategic move targets some of the world’s busiest transit hubs, including John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Miami Airport, among others globally.
Presidential vision for international exposure
During the Guyana Marketing Corporation’s annual Dinner and Awards ceremony, President Dr. Irfaan Ali unveiled the initiative.
His vision is to place Guyana Shops at strategic international locations, transforming these hubs into gateways for showcasing Guyanese products.
The President’s plan involves a collaborative effort with the Minister of Tourism to explore and implement these shops at key global points, ensuring that travelers have easy access to products from Guyana.
Emphasizing storytelling in marketing
President Ali highlighted the critical role of storytelling in marketing Guyanese products.
He pointed out the current shortcomings in effectively communicating the unique stories behind local items, from agricultural goods to handmade hammocks.
According to Dr. Ali, enhancing the narrative around these products is essential to attract and engage global consumers.
Government commitment to market expansion
The Guyanese government is not only committed to the idea but is also actively investing in it. Plans are underway to secure shelf and branding space in both international and regional markets.
Dr. Ali emphasized the need for improvements in quality, production, and sustainability to match the government’s investment, ensuring that Guyanese products meet global standards.
Boosting local brand visibility
In addition to international efforts, the government is also focusing on enhancing the visibility of local products within domestic markets.
President Ali stressed the importance of prominent placement for local goods in supermarkets across Guyana, advocating for prime shelf space rather than relegation to less visible areas.
Demonstrating commitment through local success
To date, the establishment of 90 Guyana Shop corners across the nation underscores the government’s dedication to promoting local products.
This domestic success lays a solid foundation for the international expansion plans, aiming to replicate this success on a global scale and bring Guyanese culture to the world stage.
