Colombia’s largest airline, Avianca, is set to launch direct flights to and from Guyana starting December 11. The airline will operate two weekly flights between Cheddi Jagan International Airport in Guyana and El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, utilizing Airbus A320 aircraft with a capacity of 180 passengers, providing over 700 seats per week. Flights will arrive in Georgetown on Tuesdays and Saturdays, with departures on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Avianca’s entry adds to the growing number of airlines serving Guyana, now totaling seven since 2020, and expands access to five new destinations. David Alemán, Avianca’s Sales Director for Colombia and South America, expressed “high expectations for Georgetown.”
Government officials view this new service as a vital step in positioning Guyana as a regional hub for travel and commerce. Minister of Public Works Deodat Indar noted that the government’s ongoing investment in modernizing aviation infrastructure and partnerships with global airlines will significantly enhance interest in the country’s unique offerings.
Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Oneidge Walrond is optimistic that the new Avianca flights will boost visitor arrivals and stimulate investment and economic growth in Guyana. She noted that the service will significantly enhance the local tourist industry, creating new jobs and opportunities for businesses, further solidifying Guyana’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.
With these new flights, travelers from Guyana will gain access to over 140 routes across the Americas and Europe, including major U.S. cities and key destinations in South and Central America, as well as Spain, France, and the United Kingdom.
This year, Cheddi Jagan International Airport has already seen an addition of 200,000 airline seats and an increase of 125,000 passenger movements, highlighting the growing connectivity and appeal of Guyana as a travel destination.
