BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS — After a resounding series victory over Bangladesh, West Indies Women’s Head Coach Shane Deitz has hailed the triumph as an invaluable stepping stone toward their 2025 World Cup qualification campaign.
The Caribbean side clinched the ODI series 2-1 before asserting total dominance in the T20I series, sweeping Bangladesh 3-0. The final match, held Friday at Warner Park, saw the West Indies cruise to a clinical five-wicket victory.
Now, with a pivotal World Cup qualifying tournament looming, Deitz believes his squad has gained critical insights and renewed confidence ahead of their next challenge.
‘We now have a blueprint for success’ – Deitz
The West Indies will soon face Bangladesh again, along with Pakistan, Ireland, Scotland, and Thailand, in a high-stakes qualifying battle, with only two teams securing a spot at the 2025 World Cup in India.
Reflecting on the just-concluded series, Deitz emphasized that the experience provided a strategic advantage heading into the qualifiers.
“It’s a real important tournament, so it gives us a bit of a clue as to where we can use players for certain roles,” Deitz explained in a post-match press conference on Friday.
“It gives the players confidence to know that we will play Bangladesh in the qualifier, along with Pakistan and Thailand—a few teams that all play similar styles of cricket—so we know how we’re going to attack that cricket and that style of play.”
The familiarity with their opposition’s playing style could prove to be a game-changer when the West Indies step onto the field for the must-win qualifiers.
Winning start in 2025 sets the tone for greater challenge
Beyond the tactical lessons learned, Deitz was thrilled with how his team opened the year on a winning note.
“It’s going to be a big year, so two wins under our belt to start the year is very promising, but [there’s] a lot of cricket to play this year,” he stated.
While pleased with their performance, Deitz acknowledged that there’s still room for improvement and hinted at upcoming changes within the squad.
“We’ve still got to improve in certain areas, plus some players have to come back in the squad too, so it’s looking positive for 2025, for sure.”
Gajnabi and James excel as senior players rested
The final T20I victory on Friday was particularly encouraging, as it was secured despite several senior players sitting out.
“I thought with the ball it was really good, particularly [Jannillea] Glasgow, who bowled really well up front and at the death,” Deitz noted, highlighting the youngster’s impact.
West Indies’ fielding performance was also sharp and disciplined, reinforcing their well-rounded dominance in the series.
However, there were some tense moments with the bat, as the middle order briefly faltered. Still, Shabika Gajnabi and Zaida James delivered under pressure, guiding the side home in a composed finish.
“We had a few scary moments on the way and a few nervy moments, but we got over the line,” Deitz said.
“It was good to see [Shabika] Gajnabi and Zaida [James] get us over the line—two young players who’ve been around for a little bit. So it was good for them to step up and take a bit of responsibility.”
Their performances offered a glimpse into the team’s future, proving that West Indies cricket has emerging stars ready to take center stage.
Deitz urges players to dominate domestically before the qualifiers
With the international series concluded, Deitz’s attention now shifts to the upcoming regional women’s tournament, where he expects his squad members to make a powerful statement for their respective teams.
“We have the regionals now, so I really want the players to dominate for their countries—get some hundreds, get big scores; bowlers bowl 10 overs and get four- or five-wicket hauls…to really dominate that tournament.”
Strong performances at the domestic level, he believes, will carry over into the qualifiers, ensuring that West Indies enter the tournament brimming with both confidence and personal form.
“Then we can go to the qualifiers with a bit of confidence, personal form, but a bit of confidence as a team as well,” Deitz concluded.
With the team’s winning momentum, strategic insights, and clear determination, the West Indies Women look poised to make an emphatic push toward securing their spot at the 2025 World Cup.
