West Indies unveil dynamic ODI squad for tours of Ireland and England

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies (CWI) has named a vibrant and versatile 15-man squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) tours of Ireland and England, setting the stage for a pivotal leg in the Caribbean side’s long-term march toward the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.

The squad, announced recently, blends proven performers with rising talent and reflects a clear intent to build on the momentum generated from last year’s home series triumphs against England and Bangladesh.

Led by captain Shai Hope, the team will play three ODIs against Ireland (May 21–25) followed by another three-match showdown with England (May 29–June 3). The tours mark the first international outings for the West Indies ODI side in 2025.

Sammy eyes continuity and culture

Head Coach Daren Sammy, who guided the team to a clean sweep over Bangladesh and a crucial win over England in late 2024, emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency and cultivating the right mindset.

“These matches form a critical component towards the 2027 World Cup,” Sammy stated. “There are signs of the team building consistency following the series sweep against Bangladesh and the win over England late last year.”

Sammy, a double World Cup-winning captain, acknowledged the potentially challenging playing conditions in Ireland and England, but welcomed the tests as part of the broader developmental blueprint.

“We expect the conditions to be challenging, but we are creating a culture and mindset which emphasize playing the brand of cricket that is taking us closer to some of our overall objectives,” he affirmed.

Fresh coaching energy for the European tour

In a noteworthy addition to the backroom staff, Ravi Rampaul—a former West Indies pace spearhead and 2012 T20 World Cup winner—joins the squad as Bowling Coach, replacing James Franklin. His appointment is expected to inject fresh insight and experience into the young fast-bowling unit.

Adding a strategic local dimension to the Irish leg of the tour, Kevin O’Brien, one of Ireland’s most decorated allrounders, has been named to support the coaching team during that series. The move signals CWI’s intent to leverage regional expertise to better prepare for local conditions.
