West Indies U19 Women crumble against ruthless New Zealand in warm-up clash

New Zealand’s batting innings was anchored by a masterclass from opener Emma McLeod, who smashed a scintillating half-century off just 42 balls. Her partner, Kate Irwin, was equally impressive, crafting a composed 46 from 41 deliveries.

The pair’s dazzling partnership propelled New Zealand to a formidable 151 for two in their allotted 20 overs. In a tactical move, both McLeod and Irwin retired to provide opportunities for their teammates, with McLeod departing at 89 and Irwin following at 115.

Eve Wolland (22 not out) and Anika Todd (20 not out) showcased their finesse by finishing the innings unscathed, maintaining the momentum established by the openers.

West Indies struggles begin early

Faced with a steep chase, the young West Indies side faltered early, losing key wickets in rapid succession. By the 10th over, they were in dire straits at 31 for five, their hopes of a competitive pursuit all but extinguished.

A few bright spots emerged amidst the gloom. Brianna Harricharan contributed a valiant 16 runs, while Kenika Cassar’s unbeaten 13 and Asabi Callender’s 10 added minor resistance. However, the team was ultimately bundled out for a paltry 72, a far cry from the target.

Anika Todd, having impressed with the bat, showcased her all-round capabilities with a sensational bowling spell. Her figures of 2 for 3 underscored New Zealand’s dominance and left the West Indies batting line-up in tatters.

Lessons ahead for the WI Women

The defeat highlights areas of concern for the West Indies, particularly their batting under pressure and early-game strategies. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s comprehensive performance underscores their preparedness and depth as they head into the competitive fixtures.

As the tournament progresses, both teams will seek to refine their strategies—New Zealand building on their momentum and the West Indies addressing the shortcomings exposed in this warm-up match.
