The International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled the contenders, including Matthews, alongside Sri Lanka Women’s captain Chamari Athapaththu and South Africa Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt.

Matthews, a Barbadian all-rounder, previously secured the ICC Women’s Twenty20 International Player of the Year title in 2023 and is now in contention for the monthly accolade following an exceptional performance across both white-ball formats. Her notable contributions include amassing 451 runs and claiming 12 wickets during the specified period.

Scoring 325 runs at a remarkable average of 162.50

In the ICC Women’s Championship One-Day Internationals against Pakistan, Matthews showcased remarkable prowess, scoring 325 runs at a remarkable average of 162.50 while also securing six wickets. Additionally, in the subsequent T20I series against the same opponents, she contributed with both bat and ball, accumulating 126 runs and capturing six wickets in the first three matches.

Matthews’ stellar performances earned her four Player of the Match awards, including two each in the ODIs and T20Is. Notably, she clinched the Player-of-the-Series distinction in the ODIs against Pakistan, where her team achieved a comprehensive 3-0 series sweep.

In the series opener against Pakistan, Matthews delivered an unbeaten knock of 140 runs from 150 balls, setting the tone for her outstanding series performance. She also displayed her bowling prowess, securing three wickets for 17 runs in the same match. Subsequently, in the second ODI, Matthews contributed with both bat and ball, further solidifying her impact on the series.

A brisk 58 runs and a pivotal three-wicket haul

Transitioning to the T20Is, Matthews’ versatility continued to shine as she contributed crucial runs and wickets. Despite a rare duck in the opening match, she bounced back with significant performances in the subsequent matches, including a brisk 58 runs and a pivotal three-wicket haul in the second T20I.

Meanwhile, Laura Wolvaardt, an opening batsman and off-spinner from South Africa, aims to secure the award for the first time after showcasing exceptional batting form, including an unbeaten 184-run knock. Chamari Athapaththu, the former ICC Women’s ODI Player of the Year, is also in contention after her remarkable innings of 195 not out, which facilitated Sri Lanka’s historic run chase against South Africa.

The ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for April promises to be fiercely contested, with each nominee having made significant contributions to their respective teams’ success.
