Washout leaves West Indies Academy’s semi-final hopes in limbo

Unfavorable weather conditions marred the West Indies Super50 Cup clash between the West Indies Academy and the Windward Islands Volcanoes, resulting in the match being abandoned in Trinidad.

Persistent torrential rain rendered the outfield at the Frank Worrell Field on The University of the West Indies’ St Augustine campus waterlogged, preventing any play.

The scheduled match was the final encounter in the preliminary phase of the tournament for both teams. Consequently, each team earned two points from the washout, with the Academy accumulating 33 points and the Volcanoes finishing with 19.

New bonus points system

While the Volcanoes have been eliminated from the tournament, the Academy’s chances of reaching the semi-finals now hinge on the results of other matches. With a new bonus points system offering a maximum of 24 points in each match, the Combined Campuses & Colleges Marooners (27 points) and the Guyana Harpy Eagles (25 points) still have an opportunity to surpass the Academy in the standings.

The Marooners face a tough challenge in their final match against the leaders, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, while the Harpy Eagles have a potentially easier fixture against the bottom-placed Jamaica Scorpions, the defending champions.

The tournament’s preliminary phase concludes with a match on Sunday between hosts Trinidad & Tobago Red Force and arch-rivals Barbados Pride at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA). The BLCA will also host the semi-finals next Wednesday and Thursday, as well as the final next Saturday.

For the West Indies Academy, their quest for a semi-final spot remains uncertain, pending the outcomes of the remaining matches in this closely contested West Indies Super50 Cup.
