TAROUBA, Trinidad – Openers Johnson Charles and Faf du Plessis produced a stunning batting display to help the St Lucia Kings secure a commanding 80-run victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) on Tuesday.
Their scintillating opening partnership of 145 runs laid the foundation for the Kings’ massive total of 218 for six at the Brian Lara Stadium.
The Knight Riders, in response, crumbled under the pressure, being bowled out for 138 in 17.5 overs. This victory pushed the Kings to their seventh win in nine matches, extending their lead at the top of the CPL standings by four points over second-placed Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Charles was the chief destroyer, blasting 89 from 40 balls, while du Plessis played the perfect supporting role with 59 off 43 deliveries. The duo set the tone from the start, taking the Knight Riders’ bowlers to task, particularly pacer Jayden Seales, who was hit for three boundaries in the very first over.
Half-century in just 23 balls
Du Plessis took charge in the fifth over, dispatching Akeal Hosein for a six and a four, while Charles hammered Chris Jordan for a six and two boundaries in the sixth over to take the Kings to 54 without loss in the powerplay.
Charles reached his half-century in just 23 balls, demolishing Waqar Salamkheil with three sixes and a four in a single over. He continued to plunder the bowlers, striking two more sixes and a four off Salamkheil, who conceded 51 runs in his three overs.
Du Plessis, meanwhile, reached his own fifty off 36 balls by smashing Seales for back-to-back sixes in the 13th over. Seales had his revenge, dismissing Charles later in the over for a brilliant 89, which included eight sixes and seven fours.
Tim Seifert added to the onslaught with a quickfire 30 off 17 balls, while du Plessis fell for 59 after being caught off Kieron Pollard. Pollard, despite the heavy defeat, was the standout bowler for the Knight Riders, taking four wickets and helping to restrict the Kings to 218 after they seemed set for an even larger total.
Star with the ball
In their chase, the Knight Riders lost wickets at regular intervals. Alzarri Joseph removed Keacy Carty for two, and the dangerous Nicholas Pooran fell to Roston Chase for just 10. Spinner Noor Ahmad was the star with the ball for the Kings, taking 3-29, including the crucial wickets of Tim David and Akeal Hosein.
Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard was dismissed without scoring, signaling the end of any hope for the home team. Jason Roy fought hard with a top score of 41, and Jordan chipped in with 27, but it was not enough to avoid a crushing defeat.
David Wiese also played a key role with the ball for the Kings, claiming 2-27, as the Knight Riders were bundled out for 138.
