The stage is set for an electrifying showdown between Jamaica’s squash titans, Ashante Smith and Bruce Burrowes, as they prepare to battle for glory in the inaugural Jamaica Invitational Squash Tournament final at the Liguanea Club on Sunday.
Both top seeds advanced through their respective semi-finals on Friday night, delivering performances that captivated the crowd and showcased their immense skill and tenacity.
Burrowes dominates, but challenges lurk beneath the scoreline
In the first semi-final, number two seed Bruce Burrowes dismantled fourth-seed Stephan Morrison in straight sets with commanding scores of 11-1, 11-2, and 11-7. However, the match wasn’t as one-sided as the score might suggest.
Reflecting on his performance, Burrowes shared his satisfaction while acknowledging the difficulty of the rallies. “I’m quite happy with how I played today. Just taking it one point at a time,” he said. “Stephan may have been a little slow to wake up, but by the end, he was definitely running around. Sometimes the score doesn’t reflect how close a match can be.”
Burrowes’ victory marked the end of Morrison’s previously unbeaten run in the tournament, cementing his place in the eagerly awaited final.
Smith survives a five-set epic against hope
The second semi-final provided a dramatic contrast, as number one seed Ashante Smith faced a grueling five-set battle against Bahamas’ number five seed Jonathan Hope. Smith came out strong, claiming the first two games, but Hope’s resilience and precision in the box turned the tide.
With the match tied at two games apiece, the decider became a test of endurance and nerve. Smith surged to a 5-1 lead, only to see Hope rally back to tie the set at 10-10. In a tense finale, Smith displayed extraordinary composure to edge out Hope 12-10, sealing the match with scores of 11-9, 11-7, 2-11, 5-11, 12-10.
“Honestly, it was a lot of work,” Smith admitted. “I had to really dig deep and adjust my game plan. I’m glad I was able to stay flexible and creative because it definitely wasn’t an easy game.”
