Reigning Olympic Games silver medalist in the 100 meters, the exceptional Shericka Jackson, is gearing up to commence her 2024 season with an exciting appearance at the JAAA/Puma Fuller/Anderson Development Meet, set to take place at G C Foster College in Spanish Town on Saturday.
Jackson is poised to shine as she headlines the field for the women’s 60 meters event. Joining her in this stellar line-up are her fellow MVP Track Club teammates, Tina Clayton, a two-time World Under-20 champion in the 100 meters, and her twin sister Tia.
The roster of formidable athletes also features Serena Cole, Jonielle Smith, Natasha Morrison, and Shockoria Wallace. Notably, the meet will witness the participation of Sada Williams, the 2022 and 2023 World 400 meters bronze medalist from Barbados, along with Bahamian sprinter Anthonique Strachan, adding to the event’s prestige.
One of the most versatile and accomplished sprinters in the history of the sport
Jackson’s remarkable 2023 season solidified her status as one of the most versatile and accomplished sprinters in the history of the sport. She achieved the illustrious Diamond League sprint double, becoming only the third woman in history to accomplish this feat. Her extraordinary performance included setting a meet record of 21.57 seconds (0.3m/s) in the 200 meters at the Prefontaine Classic during the Diamond League final at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on September 17.
This achievement came a day after she clocked an impressive 10.70 seconds (0.8m/s) to secure victory in the 100 meters. The exclusive club of athletes who have achieved this remarkable Diamond League sprint double includes Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013 and American Carmelita Jeter in 2011.
Jackson’s incredible list of accomplishments extends to successfully defending her 200 meters world title and clinching a silver medal in the 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Her performance in defending her 200 meters world title came tantalizingly close, just 0.07 seconds shy of Florence Griffith-Joyner’s world record of 21.34 seconds set in 1988.
Second-fastest time in history
Jackson’s time of 21.41 seconds in Budapest marked the second-fastest time in history. She remained undefeated in the half-lap sprint throughout the year and even improved her personal best in the 100 meters to a world-leading 10.65.
In the men’s competition, Kishane Thompson, renowned for his impressive 9.85 performance in the previous season, will be another star attraction at the event. He will be joined by MVP teammate Rohan Watson, a finalist in the 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The field also boasts prominent names like Tajay Gayle, Rusheen McDonald, Shawn-D Thompson, Odaine McPherson, Michael Campbell, and Ramone Branswell.
As the 2024 track and field season kicks off, all eyes are on Shericka Jackson and the impressive line-up of athletes, promising an exhilarating start to the year in athletics.
