Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson and the USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson have been nominated for the World Athletics International Fair Play Award, along with four other athletes.
Their nomination stems from a heart-warming moment when following their gold and bronze medal wins in the women’s 200m final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on August 25, they spontaneously embraced.
Jackson delivered an impressive performance, retaining her world 200-meter title with a time of 21.41 seconds, marking the second-fastest time ever recorded. This achievement brought her closer to Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 21.34 seconds world record from the 1988 Olympics.

Gabby Thomas, who had entered the event as the fastest in the world this year with a time of 21.60 seconds, secured silver in 21.81 seconds, while Richardson claimed the bronze with a personal best of 21.92 seconds, running in the same lane from where she had won gold in the 100m.
The winner of the World Athletics Fair Play Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and the jury’s opinions. Voting will take place on World Athletics’ social media platforms, with the announcement of the three finalists scheduled for November 7, 2023, in Monaco. The ultimate recipient of the award will be unveiled at the World Athletics Awards ceremony in Monaco on December 11.
Additionally, five other moments have been nominated for the Fair Play Award, recognizing acts of sportsmanship and compassion exhibited by athletes during various competitions, further emphasizing the spirit of fair play in athletics.
