Barbadian all-rounder Roston Chase has expressed admiration for captain Rovman Powell’s leadership, highlighting its positive impact on the West Indies Twenty20 unit as they gear up for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean and North America.
Following West Indies’ impressive 37-run victory over Australia in Perth, Chase spoke highly of Powell’s role in fostering a renewed sense of unity and self-belief within the team. Powell’s leadership tenure began a year ago when he succeeded Nicholas Pooran, who stepped down after West Indies’ failure to qualify for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
“Since he took up the role, it has been a different vibe. HE has been leading us very well, and I want to say a ‘big-up’ to Rovman Powell,” Chase told reporters in Perth.
Three consecutive series victories in 2023
Under Powell’s captaincy, West Indies secured three consecutive series victories in 2023, defeating South Africa away, and India and England at home. Chase credited Powell with instilling a “different vibe” in the team, emphasizing his effective leadership and ability to keep the players motivated and united.
Reflecting on the team’s recent performance, Chase commended Powell’s role in guiding the players and fostering a supportive team environment. He praised Powell for his encouragement and credited him with playing a significant role in the team’s success.
“The thing about this team is, everyone enjoys each other’s success, and the guys really gel together well,” Chase said of the side’s unity. “Although we have some big superstars in the team, everyone still lives as a family and as I said, enjoys each other’s success and wants everyone to do well, so I think that is something great that we have going in the team.”
Consolation victory in Perth
In addition to Powell’s leadership, Chase also acknowledged the contributions of the coaching staff, particularly head coach Darren Sammy, who was appointed last May. Chase highlighted the supportive environment created by the coaching staff, which has enabled players to perform at their best despite challenges.
Despite a series loss to Australia, West Indies secured a consolation victory in Perth, thanks to stellar performances from veteran Andre Russell and newcomer Sherfane Rutherford. Chase emphasized the team’s camaraderie and unity, noting that despite having star players, everyone supports each other and strives for collective success.
As West Indies continue their preparations for the T20 World Cup, Chase believes that Powell’s leadership and the team’s strong sense of unity will be crucial factors in their quest for success on the global stage.
