Arkansas senior Romaine Beckford showcased his dominance in the high jump by successfully defending his NCAA Division I Outdoor title on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Beckford cleared 2.26 meters on his second attempt, building on his previous success at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Although he narrowly missed out on a personal best and the Olympic qualifying standard of 2.33 meters, his performance secured him the gold medal.
Nebraska junior Tyus Wilson finished second with a height of 2.23 meters, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff senior Caleb Snowden took third with the same mark, highlighting a closely contested high jump final.
In the men’s discus, Jamaican USC freshman Racquil Broderick threw 61.77 meters to finish second, trailing South Alabama senior Francois Prinsloo, who won with a distance of 63.51 meters. Kansas junior Dimitrios Pavlidis completed the podium with a throw of 60.97 meters.
A thrilling race
The men’s 400 meters final was a thrilling race with Jamaican Florida senior Jevaughn Powell setting a personal best of 44.54 seconds to secure third place. Georgia sophomore Christopher Morales Williams narrowly edged out the competition to win in 44.47 seconds, while Alabama freshman Samuel Ogazi finished second in 44.52 seconds.
Jamaican Clemson senior Tarees Rhoden also delivered a strong performance in the men’s 800-meter final, setting a personal best of 1:45.70 minutes to finish fourth. Virginia senior Shane Cohen won the event in 1:44.97 minutes, followed by Texas A&M junior Sam Whitmarsh in 1:45.10 minutes, and Iowa State junior Finley McLear in 1:45.66 minutes.
These impressive performances highlight the strength and depth of Jamaican athletes on the collegiate stage, showcasing their potential for future international success.
