Reggae Girlz’ Busby, Sampson emphasize growth over result in 3-0 loss to France

Reggae Girlz head coach Hubert Busby expressed optimism and focus on team development after Jamaica’s 3-0 loss to France in their international friendly on Friday.

Reflecting on the rematch following the two sides’ intense 0-0 draw in the Women’s World Cup, Busby acknowledged the unique challenges of this matchup. “A lot has changed for both teams since the World Cup,” he stated. “They’re a top-10 side coming off a tough Olympics, and we’re each working toward new goals. These games are key for testing players and building our strategy step by step.”

Defender Vyan Sampson echoed the coach’s sentiments, explaining that this game was more about the team’s growth than the final score. “Facing France in the World Cup had a different intensity; we had everything on the line. This time, the stakes were different, and our goal was to bring in new players and give them experience against top competition,” Sampson said. “Despite the loss, it’s a learning moment—we’re not looking too hard at the score but at building toward bigger goals.”

Dominant side from the start

France, the dominant side from the start, tested Jamaica’s defense early, resulting in Clara Mateo’s opening goal in the 22nd minute after an uncharacteristic error from Chantelle Swaby. Captain Wendie Renard extended France’s lead before halftime, heading in a corner to make it 2-0 in the 39th minute. France’s Sandy Baltimore sealed the win shortly after the break, scoring from close range after Jamaica’s defense left her unmarked.

While the result may not have favored the Reggae Girlz, Busby saw the value in facing such formidable opposition. “Things change every day in football, so it’s about staying in the present while keeping our sights on the future,” he emphasized, noting that such high-caliber matches allow Jamaica to grow together as they incorporate new talent.

The Reggae Girlz are scheduled for upcoming friendlies against South Africa at home on November 29 and December 2, where they will continue refining their approach and preparing for future tournaments.
