Jamaica’s national senior men’s football team begins its campaign at the Copa America against reigning CONCACAF Gold Cup champions Mexico on Saturday at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 pm (EST).
And head coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, has noted that it is a privilege for the Reggae Boyz to participate in the competition, making their third appearance in the prestigious tournament, and they are the only Caribbean nation in the 2024 edition.
The tournament commenced on Thursday, with Lionel Messi’s brilliance leading Argentina to a 2-0 victory over Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Jamaica is grouped with Mexico, Ecuador, and Venezuela in Group B. The winner of the group will advance to a quarter-final match against the second-place team from Argentina’s Group A, which includes Canada, Chile, and Peru.

Hallgrimsson, hoping for a turnaround in Jamaica’s Copa America fortunes, stated, “It’s a case of seventh-time lucky for the Reggae Boyz in the Group B opener.” Jamaica’s previous Copa America outings have ended in six losses from six matches. In contrast, Mexico will be making their 11th appearance, having played 49 matches, the most by any CONCACAF nation. Mexico’s best finishes were runner-up in 1993 and 2001, with five semi-final appearances.
Mexico, under head coach Jaime Lozano, aims to secure a second continental trophy in consecutive years. Santiago Gimenez, who scored the winning goal in the 2023 Gold Cup final, will be one of the key players for Mexico. Edson Alvarez will captain the team, bringing experience from two Gold Cup titles and multiple CONCACAF Best XI selections.
The Reggae Boyz, who qualified for the tournament by reaching the 2023-24 CONCACAF Nations League finals, will be without Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey. Bailey opted out of playing in the Copa America due to ongoing disputes with the Jamaica Football Federation.
Hallgrimsson addressed Bailey’s absence last week, stating, “In this case, he [Bailey] decided not to play for Jamaica. That’s his decision, and that’s every player’s right to refuse to play for their nation. He opted to do that, and that’s the end of the story for me, absolutely the end of the story. Now, I would just want everyone to focus on those players who want to play for Jamaica, and let’s put our support and focus on those players.”
A formidable squad
Despite Bailey’s absence, Hallgrimsson has called up a formidable squad featuring Fulham’s Bobby Decordova-Reid, West Ham’s Michail Antonio, and Clermont striker Shamar Nicholson. Gold Cup Best XI player Demarai Gray will also be a crucial player to watch.
Mexico has an impressive record at Houston’s NRG Stadium, being undefeated in all but one of their 11 official encounters there. Their last match against Jamaica at this venue was a 1-0 victory during the 2005 Gold Cup group stage. This match marks their second Copa America encounter, with the first being in 2016 where Mexico won 2-0.
While Mexico are favorites, they have lost three of their past four matches, which might create some uncertainty for Lozano’s side. In contrast, Jamaica has won three consecutive matches, including a 1-0 victory over Panama and World Cup qualifying wins against Dominica and the Dominican Republic.
