Former Manchester United footballer Ravel Morrison has confessed to committing fraud by utilizing a Blue Badge parking permit that belonged to a deceased individual.
The case was brought before Manchester magistrates, where it was revealed that Morrison had used the fraudulent badge while parked on Bridgewater Street in the city during the month of May.
Morrison, who embarked on his football career with Manchester United before playing for West Ham, Sheffield United, Derby County, and his current club, DC United, admitted that he had acquired the Blue Badge for £50 from an undisclosed source in Old Trafford.
Subsequently fined £1,000
The 30-year-old footballer, hailing from Warrington, pleaded guilty to the charges of fraud and was subsequently fined £1,000. Additionally, he was ordered to cover costs totaling £508 and pay a victim surcharge of £400.
Blue Badges are typically issued by local councils to individuals with disabilities or limited mobility to facilitate parking closer to their intended destinations. In some cases, carers and family members are also eligible to use the permit.
The court heard that Morrison had prominently displayed the fraudulent Blue Badge on his parked white Audi in Manchester City center in May. Parking enforcement officers issued an initial fine when a check of the badge revealed that its registered holder had passed away in February 2022. Subsequently, Morrison’s vehicle was impounded, but he later reclaimed it.
Law applies uniformly to all individuals
Following the verdict, a representative from Manchester City Council emphasized that the ruling underscores the principle that the law applies uniformly to all individuals without exceptions. They also stated that their officers conduct routine patrols to ensure the legitimate use of Blue Badges, and any attempts to circumvent the law will be met with appropriate action.
Morrison, originally from Manchester, had ascended through the youth ranks at Manchester United but departed the club after making only a handful of appearances. Over the years, he has played for 12 different clubs, including Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City, Cardiff City, and Middlesbrough, before joining DC United in 2022. Despite representing England’s under-21 side earlier in his career, he later chose to play for the Jamaican national team.
