In a compelling Sunday afternoon matchup at Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins emerged triumphant with a 31-16 victory over the New York Giants, elevating their season record to an impressive 4-1, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2003.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa showcased his prowess, amassing 308 passing yards and delivering two crucial touchdowns. Star wide receiver Tyreek Hill played a pivotal role, amassing a remarkable 181 receiving yards and adding a touchdown to his name. Running back De’Von Achane significantly contributed with 151 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Dolphins displayed offensive dominance throughout the game, nearly doubling the Giants’ total offensive output, amassing 524 yards compared to New York’s 268. The contrast in yardage was glaring, with Miami averaging a formidable 9.7 yards per play, while the Giants struggled at just 3.9 yards per play.
Miami’s offensive onslaught began early in the game, as they scored a touchdown on their opening drive for the third consecutive game. Notably, their first four plays from scrimmage included a stellar run by Achane and impressive passes to wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson Jr., all gaining at least 20 yards. On the eighth play of the drive, Tagovailoa connected with Waddle in the end zone, marking Waddle’s first touchdown reception of the season and putting Miami in the lead, 7-0, in the first quarter.
Following a punt forced by Miami’s defence, Tagovailoa took the helm again, determined to extend their lead. On a single drive, Tagovailoa found Hill for an 18-yard gain, and Achane raced down the sideline for a breathtaking 76-yard touchdown run. This play gave Miami a 14-0 lead and marked Achane’s seventh touchdown of the season in only his fourth career game.
Gano connects on 55-yard field goal
However, the Giants swiftly responded with a 55-yard field goal by kicker Graham Gano, reducing Miami’s lead to 14-3.
Miami’s subsequent drive saw Tagovailoa connecting with Hill for a 64-yard gain, but their momentum came to a halt as they reached the New York four-yard line. On a crucial third down, Tagovailoa’s pass was tipped, and intercepted by Giants safety Jason Pinnock, who turned it for an astonishing 102-yard touchdown. A 40-yard field goal from Jason Sanders allowed Miami to maintain a 17-10 lead going into halftime.
The Dolphins initiated the second half with fervor, mirroring the first-half performance with big plays. In just 54 seconds, Tagovailoa connected with Hill for a 69-yard touchdown pass, extending Miami’s lead to 24-10.
Later in the third quarter, the Giants secured another interception, yet Miami’s defence held strong, forcing a 37-yard field goal from Gano, maintaining a two-score lead at 24-13 with 4:26 left in the frame.
The third quarter saw Dolphins relying on their running game, with seven out of eight plays in a possession dedicated to running plays. The final run, a two-yard touchdown by Raheem Mostert, further bolstered Miami’s lead to 31-13, entering the fourth quarter.
Miami defence allows only three field goals
Gano managed to notch a 51-yard field goal with just under nine minutes to play, but Miami’s resolute defence denied the Giants any closer. Miami’s defence demonstrated its prowess by allowing only three field goals and zero offensive touchdowns, restricting the Giants to a mere 85 rushing yards on 29 carries.
Defensive tackle Zach Sieler led the defensive charge with 2.0 sacks, while linebacker Jerome Baker added 1.5 sacks, with four other players contributing at least half a sack. The Dolphins’ impressive seven sacks marked their highest total in a game since December 27, 2021, against New Orleans.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor struggled, managing just 23 completions and 205 yards combined, with no pass completion exceeding 21 yards.
Tagovailoa’s stellar performance culminated in his 10th career 300-yard passing game, cementing Miami’s victory.
The Miami Dolphins will return to their home turf on Sunday, October 15, to face the Carolina Panthers, who currently hold a 0-5 record. The kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
