Johnson’s first-half brace was instrumental in Charlton’s impressive performance.

The match at Portman Road saw Charlton initially dominating possession, but Ipswich’s Sophie Peskett seized an early lead for the hosts. However, Charlton, affectionately known as the Addicks, responded emphatically to overturn the deficit.

Johnson’s heroics unfolded in quick succession as she netted two crucial goals within five minutes. Adding to the first-half tally, Freya Godfrey delivered a stoppage-time strike that gave Charlton a commanding 3-1 lead heading into halftime. Elisha N’Dow contributed another goal in the second half, sealing Ipswich’s fate.

Impressive unbeaten streak stretches to eight matches in all competitions

This victory extends Charlton Athletic Women’s impressive unbeaten streak to eight matches in all competitions, including a remarkable 6-0 triumph over Bournemouth in the previous round of the Women’s FA Cup.

Peskett had given Ipswich the early advantage with a goal in the eighth minute, taking advantage of a defensive error by Charlton goalkeeper Jessica Gray. However, Gray redeemed herself later with a crucial save in the 18th minute, denying Ipswich from doubling their lead.

Charlton’s response was swift. Johnson capitalized on a defensive mishap when Maisy Barker’s headed clearance landed favorably for her to fire home from close range in the 36th minute. Johnson’s second goal came in the 41st minute, showcasing her heading prowess as she expertly nodded in a corner kick.

Strategic changes

The Addicks continued to assert their dominance, earning a penalty that was confidently converted by Freya Godfrey in first-half stoppage time. Charlton’s coach, Karen Hills, made strategic changes in the second half to maintain control, and the visitors effectively controlled possession, limiting Ipswich’s chances.

Charlton Athletic Women effectively sealed their victory in the 74th minute when substitute Ella Rutherford, returning from a knee injury, delivered a precision free-kick into the box. Elisha N’Dow rose above the competition to head the ball into the net, extinguishing any hopes of an Ipswich comeback.
