Newly appointed Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren has taken a significant step ahead of Jamaica’s upcoming CONCACAF Nations League match against Cuba by reinstating Leon Bailey, the Aston Villa winger, to the squad.
The match is scheduled for September 6 at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Bailey’s return to the national team comes after a period of controversy. In June 2024, Bailey’s selection was suspended by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) after he publicly criticized the organization and declined to participate in the Copa America, despite being selected. The JFF cited Bailey’s desire to step back from international duties as the reason for its decision, which was intended to manage the situation and avoid further miscommunication.
However, with McClaren now leading the team, the door has been reopened for Bailey. The JFF required Bailey to formally clear the air through a written letter before being considered for national team selection. This condition has been fulfilled, allowing Bailey to be included in the squad for this crucial match against Cuba.
In addition to Bailey, McClaren has also welcomed back Demarai Gray, who has recovered from injury, adding depth to the Reggae Boyz’s offensive line-up. Norman Campbell, who plays for Randers FC in Denmark and last represented Jamaica in 2021, has also been recalled. The attacking force is further bolstered by Shamar Nicholson and Kaheim Dixon, who recently signed with Charlton Athletic.
On the defensive end
The midfield line-up, which will be key to controlling the match, includes Kasey Palmer, Karoy Anderson, Bobby Reid, Jon Russell, and Adrian Reid Jr.
On the defensive end, McClaren has called up Dexter Lembikisa, Di’Shon Bernard, Greg Leigh, Damion Lowe, Michael Hector, Richard King, Amari’i Bell, Joel Lattibeaudiere, and Ethan Pinnock. These players will be tasked with shutting down Cuba’s offense in what is expected to be a tightly contested match.
The goalkeeping duties will be shared by Andre Blake, Coniah Boyce-Clarke, and Jahmali Waite, who round out the squad.
The upcoming match against Cuba is critical for the Reggae Boyz as they aim to assert their dominance in the CONCACAF Nations League. McClaren’s decision to bring Bailey back into the team will be closely watched, as fans and analysts anticipate how the team will perform under his guidance.
