Legendary opener Desmond Haynes joins ICC Committee to shape global cricket future

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The global cricket community will once again feel the weight of West Indian influence, as Desmond Haynes, one of the sport’s most iconic figures, has been appointed to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Cricket Committee.

His inclusion signals a powerful continuation of Caribbean representation in shaping the modern game.

Haynes assumes the prestigious role following the completion of the tenure of fellow West Indian great, Roger Harper, a respected cricket mind and administrator who served the committee with distinction for the past three years.

A torch passed, a legacy continued

With this appointment, Cricket West Indies (CWI) ensures that the voice of the Caribbean remains firmly embedded within one of the sport’s most influential decision-making bodies. The ICC Men’s Cricket Committee holds the responsibility of recommending laws, playing conditions, and innovations that impact international cricket across all levels.

“The appointment of Dr. Desmond Haynes to the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee is a significant moment for West Indies cricket,” said Dr. Kishore Shallow, President of CWI.
“Not only does he bring his legendary status as one of our greatest opening batsmen but also his sharp cricket mind and deep understanding of the modern game.”

Shallow further emphasized Haynes’ administrative credentials: “His proven track record in cricket administration and previous role as Lead Selector gives him unique insights into both the technical and governance aspects of cricket. Therefore, we had no reservation in proudly recommending him to this committee.”

From crease commander to global consultant

Haynes brings not only cricketing pedigree, but also a proven legacy of leadership and vision. From January 2022 to June 2024, he served as Lead Selector for the West Indies Men’s Team, playing a pivotal role in squad development, youth inclusion, and long-term strategic planning. Now, he enters an arena where those insights can influence the very fabric of the sport worldwide.

The ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, operating as a sub-committee of the Chief Executives’ Committee, advises on crucial aspects including:

  • Laws and regulations of the game
  • Playing conditions and tournament frameworks
  • Umpiring standards and enforcement
  • Technology integration
  • Assessment of illegal bowling actions

This advisory board is composed of cricket’s elite minds—former international stars, umpires, coaches, board executives, media representatives, and associate nation advocates. Chaired by a former international cricketer with captaincy or 30+ Test match experience, members serve up to three consecutive three-year terms, making Haynes’ involvement potentially long and impactful.

A career etched in greatness

Few figures in world cricket command the reverence of Desmond Haynes. From 1978 to 1994, he donned the maroon cap in 116 Test matches—scoring 7,487 runs with 18 centuries—and featured in 238 ODIs, amassing 8,648 runs with 17 centuries. His unmatched consistency at the top of the order formed the backbone of the West Indies during its golden era.

Alongside his legendary partner, Sir Gordon Greenidge, Haynes helped script one of the most feared opening duos in cricket history. Together, they blunted bowling attacks, ignited global audiences, and etched their names into the folklore of the game. A proud moment in Haynes’ storied journey came when he helped lead West Indies to World Cup glory in 1979.

In June 2021, the cricketing world honored his legacy with his induction into the ICC Hall of Fame, sealing his place among the game’s all-time greats.

Gratitude to Harper, optimism for the future

While Haynes’ appointment charts a promising future, CWI also took a moment to salute his predecessor.

“On behalf of CWI, I must also express our sincere gratitude to Roger Harper, who has served with distinction over the past three years,” said Dr. Shallow. “Roger’s contributions have helped shape important decisions in the global game and he has represented West Indies cricket admirably at the ICC level.”

As Haynes steps into his new global role, he carries not just his reputation and wisdom, but the aspirations of a cricketing region steeped in excellence. His journey from record-breaking opener to influential policymaker reflects a full-circle evolution—one that promises to leave a lasting imprint on the game’s present and its future.
