Legacy of Hubert Lawrence revered as sporting fraternity mourns his untimely passing

The passing of esteemed athletics journalist and broadcaster Hubert Lawrence has elicited an outpouring of tributes from across Jamaica’s sporting landscape.

At 64 years old, Lawrence was found unresponsive at his home in St Catherine, prompting an array of heartfelt condolences and reflections on his impactful career.

“At a time when the nation is facing a deep sense of loss, the legacy of Hubert Lawrence shines bright, a beacon of inspiration for generations to come,” remarked Prime Minister Andrew Holness, expressing deep sorrow over Lawrence’s sudden passing. “His contributions to Jamaican sports journalism will forever be cherished.”

Opposition Leader Mark Golding reflected on Lawrence’s enduring impact, stating, “Hubert Lawrence was more than a journalist; he was a custodian of our sporting heritage. His passion for track and field was infectious, and his absence will be deeply felt.”

Minister of Sport, Olivia Grange, hailed Lawrence as a track and field guru, noting, “Hubert’s insights transcended mere analysis; they captured the essence of the sport, instilling pride in Jamaicans worldwide.”

Olympian and state minister Juliet Cuthbert Flynn expressed shock and sadness, saying, “Hubert Lawrence was a giant in the world of sports journalism. His encyclopedic knowledge and unwavering commitment to excellence set him apart.”

Reflecting on Lawrence’s multifaceted contributions, the Jamaica Football Federation offered condolences, stating, “Hubert’s legacy extends beyond athletics. His passion for documenting Jamaica’s sporting achievements enriched our collective history.”

Christopher Samuda, president of the Jamaica Olympic Association, praised Lawrence’s impact, stating, “Hubert Lawrence was a trailblazer, shaping the narrative of Jamaican athletics with his insightful commentary. His legacy will endure for generations to come.”
