In a thrilling CONCACAF Nations League semi-final at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on Thursday, Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz faced heartbreak as they conceded a last-minute goal and ultimately lost 1-3 in extra time to hosts United States.
Jamaica started strong, scoring in the first minute of play when Greg Leigh found the net with a header, giving them an early lead. However, a late own goal by Cory Burke brought the match to a surprising 1-1 draw just before full-time.
In extra time, two goals from Haji Wright sealed the victory for the US, securing their spot in Sunday’s final.
Absence of key attacking players
Despite the absence of key attacking players like Leon Bailey, Demarai Gray, Shamar Nicholson, and Michail Antonio, the Reggae Boyz displayed commendable effort throughout the match. Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson praised his players’ execution and tactical discipline despite the disappointing outcome.
Hallgrimsson expressed his admiration for his team, stating, “I thought the execution from the guys, given the absentees, was brilliant. Defensively they were absolutely spot on. But it really, really hurts for the guys. Doing so well for 90 minutes and conceding a goal with the last touch of the game.”
Throughout the match, the US dominated possession, but Jamaica’s disciplined defense kept them at bay for long periods. Despite good opportunities for the US, including chances for Christian Pulisic and Malik Tillman, Jamaica remained resilient.
Late equalizer
Reflecting on the late equalizer, Hallgrimsson highlighted the disappointment of conceding a goal after almost securing victory, stating, “I really feel for them but I want to give them a lot of credit for this game, against US at home and missing so many players.”
United States’ winning coach Gregg Berhalter acknowledged the challenge posed by Jamaica’s defense, describing the late equalizing goal as a “miracle,” emphasizing the resilience required to secure victory against a determined opponent.
In Thursday’s other semi-final, regional kingpins Mexico blanked Panama 3-0 to book the other final spot.
