Stockholm, Sweden – Beneath the roaring cheers of a record-breaking crowd of 20,428 fans at the Stockholm Arena on Thursday, Khadija “Bunny” Shaw delivered a performance for the ages, scoring twice to lead Manchester City to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Hammarby.
The triumph not only sealed City’s place in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals with two matches to spare but also etched Shaw’s name into the club’s history as its all-time top scorer in the competition.
The electrifying forward from Jamaica opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, weaving through defenders before unleashing a shot that deflected into the net past goalkeeper Anna Tamminen. Shaw’s animated celebration, aimed at silencing the raucous home crowd, earned her a yellow card, with tensions briefly flaring as an object was reportedly thrown her way from the stands.
Although Hammarby, determined to avenge last week’s 2-0 loss to City, found a moment of brilliance through Ellen Wangerheim to level the score, Shaw was far from done. In the second half, she unleashed a stunning strike from 20 yards, restoring City’s lead and ultimately securing their passage to the next stage of the tournament.
Heroics beyond the spotlight
While Shaw’s brilliance grabbed the headlines, goalkeeper Khiara Keating delivered a performance of equal importance. The 20-year-old shot-stopper produced a series of breathtaking saves, including a double denial of Cathinka Tandberg and former City midfielder Julie Blakstad, to preserve City’s slender advantage. Keating’s acrobatics in the 83rd minute, when she flung herself to block Anna Josendal’s goal-bound effort, proved pivotal in ensuring City’s triumph.
City manager Gareth Taylor heaped praise on Shaw, noting her immense contributions beyond the scoreline: “Take the goals away, and I’m still incredibly proud of how she played. She spearheaded our press, brought unmatched energy, and gave the entire team a massive boost. Having a player like that at the top changes the game.”
The two-goal haul marked yet another chapter in Shaw’s extraordinary season, as she eclipsed Georgia Stanway and Janine Beckie to become City’s all-time leading scorer in the Women’s Champions League with seven goals. Reflecting on the team’s gritty performance, Shaw said: “It was a tough game with 20,000 fans bringing so much energy. They made it difficult, but we focused on executing our plan, and we’re happy to come out on top.”
Looking ahead
With their fourth consecutive Group D victory, City now sits atop the standings alongside fellow Women’s Super League rivals Chelsea. They will aim to maintain their position when they host St. Polten on December 12, followed by a high-stakes clash against defending champions Barcelona on December 18. Securing the top spot would guarantee City a favorable seeding in the quarter-final draw on February 7.
Shaw’s journey, meanwhile, continues to inspire. From her humble beginnings to becoming one of the most feared forwards in women’s football, her meteoric rise is a testament to skill, resilience, and an unyielding passion for the game.
