England international Alex Greenwood has showered praise on her Manchester City teammate, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, highlighting Shaw’s exceptional skills and suggesting that the Jamaican star could ascend to become the world’s best player.
Shaw, at 26 years old, has become a pivotal figure in the Manchester City Women’s squad since joining the club two years ago. In the previous season, she made an indelible mark by scoring an impressive 31 goals in all competitions, making her the club’s top scorer.
In her most recent performance, Shaw netted a brace against Bristol City, marking her first goals of the new Women’s Super League season. This added to her goal against Everton earlier in the week in the FA Women’s League Cup.
Greenwood, a 30-year-old center-back for Manchester City, emphasized that Shaw’s value extends beyond her goal-scoring prowess, stating, “Her goal record speaks for itself, but Bunny is so much more than goals. What she brings to the team in terms of play, her work off the ball, and off the pitch – she is a top person.”
‘Shaw has been really strong for us’
Greenwood went on to express her belief in Shaw’s potential, saying, “I think she can be the best in the world if she wants to be. She has all the attributes to be the best in the world. I know how hard she works in training.”
Praising Shaw’s dedication and performance, Greenwood added, “It’s the reason she’s flourishing right now. She has been really strong for us, so we just need to keep feeding her, keep giving her the ball, and the rest she’ll take care of. She’s a great person to be around and a really good friend of mine as well. She is someone I can demand really high standards of, and likewise, she can of me and everyone else.”
Shaw began her professional career with Bordeaux in 2019, where she scored an impressive 34 goals in a two-year spell, earning her the Golden Boot and helping the French club qualify for the Champions League.
In the summer of 2021, Shaw made her move to Manchester City, where she made an immediate impact by scoring 16 goals in her debut season, making her the club’s second-highest goal-scorer as they secured the FA Women’s League Cup.
City’s manager expresses his pride in Shaw’s achievements
Following the retirement of veteran Ellen White, Shaw assumed the role of City’s point striker and dazzled with 24 goals in the league last season, breaking the club’s record for the most WSL goals in a single season.
Gareth Taylor, City’s manager, expressed his pride in Shaw’s achievements, stating, “I’m super proud of Bunny, and all the players are. She understands the support and help she gets here to allow her to be herself.”
Taylor further remarked, “I think what she has done is remarkable, really – to go from the first game of the season scoring and not really have a dry spell at all, maybe a couple of games. She has continued to score goals. She’s certainly a proven goalscorer, but it’s the types of goals she’s getting now and everything else she brings to us in the games. Her hold-up play is phenomenal.”
