Xavier Gilbert has been confirmed as the interim head coach of Jamaica’s senior women’s football team for two additional CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying games.
The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), the governing body for the sport in the country, made the announcement on Tuesday.
Gilbert will take charge when Jamaica hosts Group B leaders Panama on November 29 and when the Reggae Girls travel to Guatemala for their return game on December 3. Previously, Jamaica suffered a 1-2 defeat to Panama in the first leg of their home-and-away fixture, followed by a 2-2 draw with Guatemala.
In a statement, the JFF commended Gilbert and the Senior Reggae Girlz for their recent performances against Panama and Guatemala, expressing gratitude for their dedication to representing Jamaica and the JFF with outstanding performances.
Gilbert hopes all players will be available
In a post-game interview on Sunday, Gilbert admitted that he would consider if an offer was made to him to continue in the role of head coach.
“I was asked to be in charge of these two games through this window, so looking beyond this I’m sure the technical staff will get some more support and hopefully all being well, we’ll have all players available for selection to ensure that we have the best players representing Jamaica.”
He added: “It [offer] is something that I would have to consider. I have headed all the junior levels [coaches] before being head coach at 15, 17 and 30, and my first time at the senior level.”
The JFF looks forward to the upcoming matches and hopes for increased fan support for the team in their quest for success.
