JCA President lauds Indian Government for transformative scoreboard donation to Sabina Park

Sabina Park, Jamaica’s iconic cricket stadium, is set to undergo a major transformation with the installation of a state-of-the-art HD scoreboard valued at approximately US$700,000, thanks to a generous donation from the Indian Government.

This cutting-edge technology is poised to enhance the cricketing experience for both players and fans, marking a significant step forward in the modernization of the historic venue.

Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) President Dr. Donovan Bennett hailed the donation as a “game-changer” for cricket in Jamaica. “The Indian Government has always been generous to us. Their previous donation of lights to Sabina Park was a testament to their love for the game, and this new scoreboard is another example of their commitment to our sport. When we approached them, it wasn’t a difficult ask; it was an easy one,” Dr. Bennett shared with the Jamaica Observer newspaper.

Advanced capabilities

The highly anticipated scoreboard, which will be installed in time for the second Test match against Bangladesh from November 30 to December 4, will be integrated into the existing frame of the old scoreboard. While maintaining its original size, the new scoreboard will feature advanced capabilities, including enhanced advertising functions, offering a fresh revenue stream for the JCA.

“It will be the same size as the previous scoreboard, fitted into the existing structure,” Dr. Bennett explained. “However, it will include advertising features that were not available before. You are talking about the Government of India—they are going to deliver something appropriate for Sabina Park.”

The installation of the new scoreboard is just the beginning of a broader initiative to upgrade Sabina Park’s infrastructure. Dr. Bennett emphasized the need to improve the stadium’s lighting system, which currently falls short of international standards, as part of a comprehensive plan to bring the facility up to par with other leading cricket venues in the region.

May need to seek government support

“We need to get Sabina Park up to scratch,” Dr. Bennett asserted. “If you look at other stadiums in the eastern Caribbean, many are well ahead of us. For instance, Kensington in Barbados and the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad both boast first-class facilities. We’re not there yet. This scoreboard donation marks the start of our journey to retrofit Sabina Park and transform it into a truly world-class facility.”

Acknowledging the financial challenges of upgrading the lighting system, Dr. Bennett indicated that the JCA may need to seek government support to address the issue. “A lot of people don’t know that the lights we have don’t conform to international standards. It’s not a cheap problem to fix, so at some point, we will have to present a proposal to the Government to get that done,” he added.

Dr. Bennett also highlighted the significance of the Indian Government’s continued support for cricket in Jamaica, noting that their passion for the game is a driving force behind such acts of generosity. “They love the game even more than we do, and their generosity will inspire a new generation of cricketers in Jamaica,” he said.

With the new scoreboard and further planned upgrades, Sabina Park is on its way to regaining its status as a premier cricket venue, ensuring that both local and international cricket fans will continue to enjoy top-tier experiences in Jamaica.
