A cadre of talented junior athletes from Jamaica, fresh off their stellar performances at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, are set to showcase their prowess at the 2024 Carifta Games in Grenada this weekend.
The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) has assembled a formidable 79-member squad for the 51st edition of the Carifta Games, scheduled to take place at the Kirani James Stadium from March 30 to April 1. Among the standout names for the girls’ squad are Theianna-Lee Terrelonge from Edwin Allen High School and Shanoya Douglas from Muschett High School.
Terrelonge, who clinched gold in the Girls’ Class 2 100 meters at Champs, will compete in the Under-20 100m event, alongside Sabrina Dockery from Lacovia High School, who secured silver in the same event. Muschett High’s Shanoya Douglas, a double gold medalist in the Class 2 200m and 400m at Champs, will vie for victory in the Under-20 200m, accompanied by Dockery.
Double triumph in the Class 3 100m and 200m at Champs
Natrece East of Wolmer’s Girls’ School, who achieved a double triumph in the Class 3 100m and 200m at Champs, aims to replicate her success at the Carifta Games in the Under-17 category.
In the boys’ division, Marcinho Rose from Kingston College emerges as one of the team’s standout performers after his impressive showing at Champs. Rose, who clocked a personal best of 45.93 seconds in the 400m, is a strong contender in the Under-20 category.
Gary Card from Wolmer’s Boys’ School, who excelled in the Under-20 200m at Champs, aims for gold at the Carifta Games, supported by Class 2 champion Johan-Ramaldo Smythe from Muschett High.
A season’s best of 10.17 seconds
Former St. Elizabeth Technical High School standout and Elite Performance Track Club sprinter Javorne Dunkley is anticipated to make headlines in the Under-20 100m event, boasting a season’s best of 10.17 seconds.
Jamaica, the defending champions, will seek to maintain their dominance at the Carifta Games, aiming for a remarkable 38th consecutive title. With an impressive medal haul of 78 last year, including 40 gold, the nation enters the competition with high expectations and aspirations for continued success on the regional stage.
