MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — Jamaican athletes took center stage in the 2024 Suncorp Super Netball League, with Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard, Latanya Wilson, and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey earning coveted spots in the prestigious Team of the Year.
These Caribbean powerhouses left an indelible mark on the league, dominating their respective roles with unmatched skill and consistency.
Fowler-Nembhard: A towering force in attack
Representing the New South Wales Swifts, Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard continued her reign as netball royalty, delivering a record-breaking performance this season. The eight-time MVP amassed an astonishing 1,571.5 net points, showcasing her precision with a league-high 813 goals from 846 attempts.
Her consistency and unparalleled accuracy solidified her position as the league’s preeminent goal shooter. Fowler-Nembhard’s season was a masterclass in offensive excellence, cementing her legacy as one of the greatest in the sport.
Defensive Titans: Sterling-Humphrey and Wilson
Shamera Sterling-Humphrey’s defensive dominance propelled the Adelaide Thunderbirds to championship glory. The Jamaican goalkeeper was an impenetrable wall, leading the league with 36 defensive rebounds, 44 intercepts, and 96 deflections. Her commanding presence in the backcourt was instrumental in the Thunderbirds’ championship run.
Equally impressive was Latanya Wilson, who joined her compatriot Sterling-Humphrey as a cornerstone of the Thunderbirds’ defense. Wilson finished second in both intercepts (42) and deflections (82), showcasing her agility, anticipation, and tactical brilliance.
