At the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, Wayne Pinnock and Ackera Nugent, both competitors at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, showcased their talent alongside other Caribbean athletes, securing notable victories on Saturday.
Pinnock, the Jamaican long jump silver medalist in Budapest, kicked off his outdoor season with a remarkable wind-aided leap of 8.44m (5.8 m/s). The 23-year-old Arkansas standout, who previously clinched gold at the SEC and NCAA Indoor Championships this year, displayed consistency with an 8.15m jump in the first round before sealing victory with his second-round performance. Pinnock’s triumph highlighted his strong start to the outdoor season.
In the women’s long jump, Bahamian athlete Anthaya Charlton of Florida secured victory with a best jump of 6.74m, followed closely by Arkansas’s Nia Robinson and Georgia Tech’s Ameia Wilson.
Ackera Nugent, competing in her fourth 100m hurdles race of the season, secured victory with a time of 12.57 seconds. Nugent, who finished fifth in the Budapest final, displayed her prowess on the track, outpacing her competitors to claim victory ahead of Mariam Abdul-Rashid of Canada and Leah Phillips of LSU.
Romaine Beckford triumphed in the men’s high jump
Romaine Beckford, another member of Jamaica’s team at the 2023 World Championships, triumphed in the men’s high jump with a best jump of 2.23m, leading the way for Arkansas.
Natricia Hooper of Guyana emerged victorious in the women’s triple jump, showcasing her talent with a jump of 13.92m, while Apalos Edwards of Arkansas secured second place in the men’s event.
Other notable performances included Vincentian Shafiqua Maloney and Jamaican Nickisha Pryce’s strong runs in the women’s 400m, and Jamaican Jevaughn Powell’s second-place finish in the men’s 200m.
Overall, the LSU Invitational provided a platform for Caribbean athletes to shine, with Pinnock and Nugent leading the charge with their impressive victories.
