Jamaica’s senior men’s basketball team made a powerful statement in their opening game of the FIBA Americas World Cup pre-qualifiers Friday, dismantling Barbados 101-79 in Mexico.
From the opening tip to the final buzzer, the Rick Martin-coached squad held control, delivering an authoritative performance that sets a confident tone for the tournament ahead.
Thomas and Gill lead the charge
Forward Romaine Thomas was at the heart of Jamaica’s dominance, turning in a complete performance with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Equally imposing was Romario Gill, who imposed himself in the paint with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and four emphatic blocks.
Jamaica’s offense fired on multiple cylinders—Kenton Facey chipped in with 15 points, Norman Powell added 12, and Giovanni Frazer contributed 10—ensuring Barbados had no single threat to target.
Wire-to-wire control
The Jamaicans wasted no time in seizing the momentum, surging to a 36–23 lead after the first quarter. By halftime, their advantage had grown to 54–40, the ball movement sharp and defensive rotations crisp.
Even when Barbados sought to rally in the third quarter, Jamaica held firm, maintaining a double-digit cushion to lead 78–67 heading into the final period. In the closing minutes, the Reggae Hoopsters accelerated once more, outscoring their Caribbean rivals convincingly to secure a 22-point triumph.
Barbados’ lone bright spots
For Barbados, Kyrone Alexander stood out as the game’s top scorer, pouring in 28 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Akeem Marsh provided solid support with 16 points, but the team struggled to contain Jamaica’s inside-out attack and physical dominance on the boards.
With one win already secured, Jamaica turns their attention to their second assignment—a showdown against Costa Rica Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Jamaica time. A victory there would further solidify their position in the qualifiers and build momentum toward a potential World Cup berth.
