Jamaica sprint relay teams secured silver and bronze medals on the penultimate day of the 19th World Athletics Championships inside the National Athletics Centre in Budapest on Saturday.
Women’s Relay Highlights
The women’s 4x100m team comprising Natasha Morrison on first leg, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce on the second leg, Shashalee Forbes on the third leg and Shericka Jackson on anchor landed the silver medal while their male counterparts secured the bronze medal to take Jamaica’s tally at the meet to double digits – 11 – consisting on three gold, four silver and four bronze.
The women’s team saw two changes from the team which ran in the heats with Morrison and Jackson replacing Briana Williams and Elaine Thompson-Herah.
Sadly, Fraser-Pryce suffered an injury during her leg but was able to deliver the baton despite obvious pain and a noticeable loss of momentum towards the end of her run.
Forbes got the baton to Jackson, but by then the Americans had flown the coop and they went on to win in a Championships Record of 41.03 seconds to Jamaica’s 41.21 seconds.
Third place went to Great Britain in a season best 41.97 seconds.
Field Events Highlights
Moments before the men’s team of Ackeem Blake, Oblique Seville, Ryiem Forde and Rohan Watson finished third in 37.76 seconds behind the Americans in a World Leading 37.38 seconds, with Italy third in a season best 37.62 seconds.
In field events, Danniel Thomas-Dodd finished in fifth place in the women’s shot put final with an effort of 19.59m with victory going to the American Chase Ealey with a season best 20.43m.
The silver medal was won by Canadian Sarah Mitton with a season best 20.08m, with China’s Lijiao Gong finishing in third place with 19.69m.
Women’s 4x400m Relay Highlights
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s women’s 4x400m relay team produced a World Leading 3:22.74 minutes to win heat one and send an ominous warning to the other finalists down to compete for the gold medal on Sunday’s final day of competition.
Charokee Young, Nickisha Pryce, Shian Salmon and Stacey Ann Williams combined to take victory in commanding fashion from Canada in a season best 3:23.29 minutes and the Netherlands also on a season best 3:23.75 minutes for automatic qualification to the final.
Poland with a season best 3:24.05b minutes and France (3:27.50, also a season best, progressed to the medal round, also.
In heat two the US, perennial winners of this event, was disqualified for exchanging the baton outside the zone on the final leg. They passed the finish line in second place behind Great Britain in 3:23.33 minutes, with Belgium taking second place in 3:23.63 minutes for a season best, and Italy third in National Record 3:23.86 minutes.
Men’s 4×400 Relay Highlights
Rusheen McDonald, Jevaughn Powell, Zandrion Barnes and D’Andre Anderson teamed up for Jamaica to win the 4x400m relay in a season best 2:59.82 minutes in heat two ahead of France in 3:00.05 minutes (season best) and Italy also in a season best of 3:00.14 minutes.
The Netherlands produced a season best of 3.01.23 minutes for fourth place and a place in the final.
Action closes out Sunday with the quarter-mile relays being the major attractions, as well as the women’s 800m and high jump finals.
