Guyana will host the inaugural edition of the Global Super League T20 from November 26 to December 7, 2024.
This landmark tournament will feature five teams from five different countries, competing for a prize pool of US$1 million. Among the participating teams is the Guyana Amazon Warriors, alongside four other established T20 teams from around the world.
This event marks South America’s first standalone cricket tournament, and it is sanctioned by Cricket West Indies, with full support from the government of Guyana, a key stakeholder in the venture. The tournament will follow a mini-league format with 11 matches, where each team will play four games. The top two teams will advance to the final, and all matches will take place at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The Global Super League T20 is planned as an annual event, with new teams being invited each season.
Enthusiasm for the event
Guyana’s President, Mohammed Irfaan Ali, expressed his enthusiasm for the event: “The Global Super League has the full support of the Government of Guyana as we build a world-class sports tourism product. Cricket is part of our cultural history, a unifying force, and an integral part of our strategy to drive economic diversification, with a strong focus on tourism. As Guyana establishes itself as a global leader in energy, food security, and climate resilience, we will use this platform to host a world-class tournament on our shores.”
Sir Clive Lloyd, Chairman of the Global Super League, echoed the excitement, saying: “I’d like to welcome cricket fans from around the world to this exciting new event. The passion for cricket in Guyana rivals that of any country, and we are eager to showcase our love of the game and the beauty of our nation to both those attending in person and the global audience. I’d like to thank His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali for his vision of bringing a new cricket event to Guyana, one that will captivate the world.”
