The anticipation for the 113th edition of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys & Girls Championships (Champs) reached a fever pitch as the official media launch took place at the National Stadium in Kingston on Wednesday evening.
The event, slated to run from March 19-23, promises to deliver thrilling displays of high school athletics over five days of intense competition.
According to ISSA President Keith Wellington, “This year’s event promises to be another landmark staging of the greatest high school athletics championships in the world.”
The 113th anniversary of the prestigious event
This year marks the 113th anniversary of the prestigious event and the 25th anniversary of the merger between Boys and Girls Champs, adding an extra layer of significance. Defending champions Kingston College and Hydel High will be aiming to retain their titles amidst stiff competition from 101 boys’ teams and 97 girls’ teams.
“Athletes from across the island have been training tirelessly for this moment, and we are excited to witness their talents on display,” remarked Wellington during the media launch.
A total of 88 events will unfold during the championships, with each day featuring a packed schedule of finals. Notably, special exhibition mixed relays will commemorate the 25th anniversary, symbolizing the unity between boys’ and girls’ events.
AS Wellington expressed, “We expect patrons will be dazzled, not only by the performances of our athletes but will also experience pulsating entertain,ment off the track.”
Inclusion of international technical officials
The inclusion of international technical officials underscores the event’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards. According to Wellington, “The addition of international start referee and the addition of an international official to the jury of appeal will add significant credibility to these areas, enhancing the already significant reputation of Champs as a meet of the highest international quality.”
GraceKennedy, the title sponsor since 2007, reaffirmed its support with a significant investment of $178 million. Group CEO Don Wehby emphasized the company’s dedication to youth development, stating, “Our support for Champs and youth development in Jamaica is unwavering, and will continue for years to come.”
In addition, Wehby announced a special award of $202,000 for any school whose student breaks a 200m record, in honor of GraceKennedy’s 102nd anniversary.
