Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has been appointed as a technical adviser to the Afghanistan team for the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup, which starts on June 1 in the Caribbean and the United States.
The 40-year-old, who was part of the two-time men’s T20 World Cup-winning West Indies teams, will serve as the bowling consultant for Afghanistan.
Bravo follows in the footsteps of his Trinidad and Tobago compatriots, Kieron Pollard and Phil Simmons, who have also secured coaching roles for the tournament. Pollard will be working with defending champions England, the only other nation that has won the T20I World Cup twice, while Simmons will be attached to the Papua New Guinea team, competing in Group C along with co-hosts West Indies.
10-day training camp
Bravo has already joined the Afghan team in Basseterre, St Kitts, for their 10-day training camp as they prepare for the global event. Afghanistan is also in Group C, which includes New Zealand and Uganda. Their opening match in the tournament is scheduled for June 3 at the Guyana National Cricket Stadium against Uganda.
Starting his international career two decades ago, Bravo represented the West Indies until his retirement three years ago. He played in 40 Tests, 164 One-Day Internationals, and 91 T20Is, amassing over 6,000 international runs and more than 360 wickets. Bravo’s prolific career in T20 cricket includes taking 625 wickets, the most in official T20 matches, with 78 of those in international games.
Bravo was a key member of the West Indies squads that clinched the T20I World Cup in 2012 and 2016. Recently, he served as the bowling coach for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
