GROS ISLET, St. Lucia — The Saint Lucia Kings have entrusted seasoned all-rounder David Wiese with the captaincy as they prepare to defend their Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) crown this season.
The 40-year-old replaces former skipper Faf du Plessis, who stepped down to prioritize family commitments. While Wiese has not frequently captained in franchise cricket, his leadership credentials include guiding Namibia in T20 Internationals — a tenure credited with helping the associate nation rise in global stature.
A proven performer in the blue
Wiese, a fixture in the Kings’ setup for three of the past four seasons, has built a reputation as a dependable match-winner. Whether breaking crucial partnerships with his sharp medium pace or producing explosive lower-order cameos, he has repeatedly delivered in pressure moments.
Beloved by the Saint Lucian faithful, his leadership is expected to combine on-field impact with a steady, battle-tested presence. As the Kings seek to repeat last year’s triumph, Wiese’s ability to thrive under duress could prove invaluable.
Sammy backs his new captain
Head coach and former captain Daren Sammy voiced unequivocal support for the appointment.
“He’s part of the family, a player who’s been with us for years and delivered outstanding performances,” Sammy said. “We’re excited to kick off our campaign, especially our first home game on August 23 at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.”
The coach also issued a rallying cry to the Kings’ loyal supporters. “Our fans are the best in the CPL. We know you’ll turn out in full force, paint the stadium blue, and give our new captain and the entire squad your unwavering support.”
Eyes on a historic repeat
With a title defense at stake, the Kings will look to blend continuity with renewed energy under Wiese’s stewardship. For a side that thrives on unity and flair, the appointment marks both a nod to loyalty and a statement of intent.
